Charter schools are independently-run public schools created by contract (or "charter") to meet specific goals for student learning and achievement. Charter schools bring new resources, personnel and ideas to public education and give families a greater choice within the public school system.
Each charter school is given more autonomy in exchange for greater accountability for the quality of its academic programs. For charter school leaders to succeed, they need guidance, resources and information on what works best in the planning and operation of each school. That is the reason New York City Charter School Center was created.
